E D U C A T I O N CRBT seeks to educate the public on a variety of issues relating to housing and the environment. This education takes place both through formal structures and informal means. For the classroom, CRBT relies on our K-12 curriculum and live presentations by staff members. Professionals continuing their education in resource efficient building have the opportunity to experience CRBT workshops, presentations and seminars at conferences nationwide. In addition, the media is a powerful educational tool for introducing resource efficiency to the general public. In the Media Features on CRBT's work and quotes from CRBT staff have appeared in publications as diverse as:
CRBT projects have also been featured on national and international television programs. Each media appearance helps raise public awareness of the potential for making building construction more resource efficient. Conferences Through conferences, trade shows, professional gatherings and workshops across North America, CRBT promotes resource efficiency and environmentally sensitive design to the public. CRBT staff members are experienced in conducting slide presentations, workshops and seminars on resource efficient building materials and design. A listing of past engagements includes presentations for audiences ranging from the general public and homeowners at the Minneapolis Home and Garden Show and Yestermorrow Design/Build School, to building industry professionals at the Energy Efficient Building Association and U.S. Green Building Council. Building Our Children's FutureCRBT has recently undertaken a major education project with a focus on
the next generation of builders, architects, designers, and homeowners.
"Building Our Children's Future" is an interdisciplinary K-12
curriculum designed to inspire and inform our future generation about responsible
use of natural resources in building design and construction. The program
encourages exploration of the relationship between natural resource consumption
and the buildings where we live, work and learn......Order
Here Since the start of 1998, instructors have had an opportunity to augment the BOCF curriculum with a traveling multimedia presentation. The BOCF trunk includes two scripted slide shows on resource efficient building and recycled building materials, as well as a library of additional images for student activities. A wide variety of recycled building material samples with labels is included in the trunk to facilitate additional student activities. If you are an instructor in grades K-12 in the state of Montana, contact CRBT to reserve a slot in the Trunk's travel schedule. Scope:The curriculum is topically divided into "blocks." The activities developed for each block allow students to practice and master skills in:
Each block is interdisciplinary, and instructors have the option of selecting the particular blocks and activities best suited to their objectives and subject matter. As a whole, the fifteen blocks in this package comprise a complete unit on natural resources and the buildings made from them. Structure:Each block consists of a "Summary Overview" listing goals, objectives, materials, activities, and the learner outcomes of each activity. A page of "Activities" that can be reproduced as a student handout follows each overview. Each block also includes a section of "Resource Notes" that provide the instructor with supplemental information on the activities, and references for further research on related topics. Content:As a way to bring together the built environment and the natural resources that are used to develop that environment, the curriculum consists of fifteen blocks focusing on a different aspect of our natural and built world.
